Following the regularly scheduled walk, we had the opportunity to take out a group of children with their adult chaperones, who consisted of grandparents, parents and a school club leader. Many of the birds seen at the first walk were sighted again including the Red-tailed Hawks and a group of passerines that were feeding in the same hawthorn tree that had a variety of birds earlier in the day. One of our youngsters had a very good eye and found a downy woodpecker for the whole group to see.
Some of the most fun that we had did not include a bird! One of the young ladies from Shelby Junior High School found a mouse marooned in the empty fountain in the Rose Garden. After much exclamation over his cuteness, we rescued “Shelby” and set him free from the confined area, watching as he scurried off into the flower beds.
Following the walk, we viewed slides of birds common to the area. The younger children created feeders to take home and see who might visit their feeding station.
