Dear Friend of Nature,
Are you ready for the pleasures of fall birdfeeding? In the past weeks, we've seen our yard birds go through some changes as they get ready for fall. The downey woodpeckers have gone through their fall molt, as witnessed by the crispness in their black and white plumage. The goldfinches are also going through fall plumage changes. Slowly, they are losing their bright yellow feathers and growing in their khaki colored winter garb. Chickadees are traveling in family groups and are constantly calling to each other. The cooler nights mean that they need more food in order to pack on the fat that allows them to stay warm.
We need to get ready also. In order to eliminate the possibility of cracking, cement and ceramic birdbaths need to be taken into storage or covered with plastic before the first frost. Check your heated bird bath or your bird bath de-icer to make sure it is working. Hardware should be touched up with rust proof paint if needed. Clean the feeders to keep your feeding station a healthy place.
Now is the time to offer as much variety as possible. Keep those finch feeders filled so that you can enjoy the winter goldfinches as well as any visiting finches that may arrive from the north. The prediction this year is that we will see an increase in purple finches - won't that be fun! If you haven't been enjoying birds at suet during the summer, it's a great time to invite the insect eating birds to your yard. Variety is the spice of bird feeding and we would love to make suggestions on new foods you can offer to entice more birds to your feeders. Enjoy your birds!
